The SH-15 is a pickup that has to be played to be understood. It's a magnet type most aren't familiar with, and it's a wind spec and wire type that make it very different than other pickups in the Seymour Duncan lineup. There are certain aspects of this pickup that defy common understanding. For example, at 17.7k it's not dark, it has great highs and harmonics. For the A8 magnet it's not harsh or overbearing in the top end either. It's got great attack and punch up front to hit the amp. I have to watch what I say, though, because every Beta Tester saw the potential for this pickup, but many had different reasons for liking it. Some liked it for power rock, some liked that it stayed tight for drop tuning, some liked the way it blasted the front end of a tube amp, and some liked how the Alnico magnet made it integrate tonally with the 59N in a more cohesive manner than say a Distortion for example.
Ok guys, just installed my SH15 Yesterday....And that's an instant classic ^^In my Vigier Indus, wanted a replacement for the EVO2 / EVo, which like all the ceramic pickups sounded good with distortion but cold as hell on the clean / Crunch channel. Like most DIMarzio's...So SH2 in the Neck, And the A8 sounded a good way to have this "warm" duncan sound with enough output to play both heavy and classic rock.The first thing that was really visible with the A8 is its similarity to the JB.It's a TYPICAL duncan sound, which is good. Warm, clear, versatile.But it's NOT a JB. Clearer, it doesn't have this midraneg spike and low endmudiness. The sound remains clear and over the top, brigt but never harsh.So if it had to be compared i'd say it's the righ blend between what people expectfrom both teh JB and DIstortion. Output, striking rythm one, good cleans, and singing leads.My guitar is 100% equilibrated, so the pikups response is very clear.I bet it would sound KILLER in my Les paul, or any mahogany guitar as well, since itwould make the BASS sound both heavy and tight, which only the L500 XL and sh12 do.In Strat or Tele type giutars, generally bright, one woul probably use 250k potsto avoid an exagerate treble response, but the pickup isn't harsh so it would prbably work.In "superstrat" type guitars, which is the case here, it's SO versatile.Wanna sound like an 1980's shredder ? You will and probably better...Want to play Classic Rock ? You can, and will get enough FAT.Like Funk ? Well good match, the Split position is SO bright,with a sparkling attack, it gives amazing cleans and with myQtron awesome funky riffs.Is there something this pickup can't do ?Honestly, no. It's probably as versatile as the JB,and it's Alnco type sound makes it a good match with myJAZZ but would probably be equally good with a pearly gates or 59,or full shred...This pickups, to me, plays in the PRO league ^^The only pickups i have that sounded THAT good are theBill Lawrence L500-L, Screaming Demon, 59 and Super V.These pickups are not only good at delivering one type of sound(one trick ponies usually get boring after 1 or 2 months),but they are also brilliant at giving you any type of sound.In short, if you need a relpacement pickup, whatever you want,and even more if you're not sure, go for the A8, you can't go Wrong.Thumbs up to SD once more, i own 10 guitars and 8 of them nowhave SD's (the remaining ones are a tele with stock fender and aBurny with a Bill Lawrence). Sold all my Dm's, EMG's and others.In the future.... Well nothing, i finally found the right pickupfor each of my guitars, so i would have to buy one more to trynew pickups ^Anyway, the goal is to get inspiring intruments thatmake you wanna play more and more, and here i am...Can't put my guitars down, and trust me it seriouselygets on my girlfriend's nerves ^^
